Sophia Newton: Dancing for Healing, Faith, and Mental Health
For Sophia Newton, dance has never been just performance. It is prayer, storytelling, and a pathway to healing. The UK-based dancer, movement artist, and creative educator has developed a unique voice that blends African traditional dance, expressive movement, and storytelling to advocate for mental health and inspire faith.
Her journey has taken her from performances and productions in Nigeria to cultural stages in the UK and international platforms abroad. In 2017, Sophia performed Freedom in Nigeria, a powerful piece on identity and resilience. In 2024, she presented Listen at the Global South Arts & Health Week in Qatar, a moving work that raised awareness about children’s mental health. In 2025, she brought Ọ̀rì – The Crown We Carry to the Onídìrí Festival in London, where she combined traditional and expressive movement with Yorùbá chants and bata drumming to celebrate heritage and resilience.
Other performances such as When We Worship in the UK, a faith-based spoken word and movement piece guiding audiences through release and restoration for mental health, her contribution to the Urhobo Collective Father’s Day Celebration where she honoured fathers and highlighted mental health themes through Urhobo traditional dance, and her choreography for children at the Crawley Shine Bright event all showcase her ability to weave advocacy, culture, and faith into every stage she steps on.
Beyond performance, Sophia has also worked as a dance instructor and creative educator, teaching and choreographing for children, teens, and community groups. She is the founder of Express & Bloom Limited, a platform that uses dance, arts, and storytelling to build confidence, support wellbeing, and nurture resilience in children, teens, and women. Through Express & Bloom, she curates sessions and performances that affirm identity, encourage self-expression, and create safe spaces for reflection and healing.
This autumn, Sophia will present her first independent UK live dance showcase, Becoming Again. The performance traces the stages of mental health, fear, anxiety, and brokenness, transformed through faith, prayer, and creative expression into peace and restoration in Christ.
“Dance is more than movement,” Sophia says. “It is a language of hope. It is how I pray, how I heal, and how I advocate. With Becoming Again, I want audiences to see that no matter what struggles they face, it is possible to rise, to restore, and to become whole again.”
As Sophia continues to expand her work, both in the UK and internationally, her vision remains clear: to use art as a tool for healing, mental health advocacy, cultural pride, and faith-driven impact.
